Today I met Claire. She came to my home, ready to stretch and move...she is my new physical therapist.
Now...do you ever nearly snarl by the end of some days, with your face in a box of donuts? I do.
Today I was pretty crabby by the time Claire arrived for our appointment. And I spilled out to her that it had been a hard day. A bad day, with a highlight being to moan and groan and loudly complain...while I tried to sweep my kitchen floor, feeling shaky and generally annoyed from all the necessary pain meds. Down fell the broom, down fell the crutches. I told my mom that I wouldn't be getting an Amputee Gold Star today.
End of story...
...but Claire listened for awhile, reassuring and comforting, telling me that it is "totally normal" to still feel my amputated leg. Bizarre, right?!? I was scared and she held my hand, showing me a bright and new vision of my future. Even if it is different than I ever imagined...just different...as she marveled about my old ballet moves on crutches. I exhaled and laughed and the world looked oh so beautiful again, as I broke into a big smile.
Often, we believe it is our own vision that must pull us into a future. That it is all something we must do ourselves. Yet as I sat hooked up to chemo this past winter, feeling pretty weak and blurry many days, beloved family and friends believed in me. It was their vision that carried me to many doctor appointments and on.
When we believe in another, it is a profound gift to them, indeed. And all it asks of us is to say...I believe in you. I believe in you. I believe in you...and watch the magic happen. And then let someone believe in you too.
P.S. Thank you, dear Aunt and Fairy Godmother Connie for believing that I will dance again.
