Do you wake and turn to your phone. I do. Do you walk to the coffee maker, the news headlines ablaze in your head? I do. Do you try to sort your day, dive instead into a mush of errands, work and meals? I do.
Do you love beauty and light, yearn for the sublime? I do.
Today I downloaded a meditation that instructed me to find my still center. Head fell back on my cushy pink chair, body fell to peace. Lovely, I oozed comfort. My phone rang. My son’s name popped up. “Mom, could you please come look at the bricks?” He was working on some yard landscaping. I ran down. Quick answer given, trudged back to the cushy chair. Heart beating faster, I softened into the lull. Five minutes later, ring ring ring. “Mom, I need you to look again.” This cycle continued through the 15-minute meditation, now broken into five minute chunks.
If we wait for the perfect time, things do not happen. Maybe you have mastered the art of organization, with life zipped into categories. Not me. After starting a nonprofit in Kenya and building it with others over time, I have come to believe in the power of tucking good stuff into the rest of life. The power of a few minutes, to travel quickly to our hearts and write just one paragraph, call a friend, read a poem, research business space rates...you get the picture.
To slip from our lives and play with whispers of whimsy, knowing that we will get back to the dishes or the laundry. So explore with me the moments between moments, where one step leads to many, where our whispers are made real, where our canvas becomes color.
