My eyebrows have returned, just as I end radiation treatment. It is the little things, right? Remember the joy of the small stuff, always we must.
Today I said goodbye to my new friends, all those warm and kind people working in radiation oncology at the University of Minnesota. When the door swung shut, my heart cinched.
Every day that I went for treatment, a total of 25 times, a security guard waved me through with a big welcoming smile. Every day that I checked in, a receptionist cheered me on, you go girl. Every single time, my techs put a warm blanket on me as we happily chatted about our lives, lifting my spirits.
A few days during treatment I broke down and cried in radiation. Alone in that room with the big machine, I realized that when you can't move your head, the tears just silently flow down the sides of your face. But when the treatment was over, the techs would come into the room again with their kindness and cheer and my tears were gone.
It's the simple stuff, right? Kindness and eyebrows.
As I walked out of the hospital today, I remembered something and smiled...a quote by Henri-Frederic Amiel, "Life is short. We don't have much time to gladden the hearts of those who walk this way with us. So be swift to love and make haste to be kind."
Yup, this is true. And what a happy blessing.
